Don Engebretson and Archadeck at the upcoming Fort Wayne Home and Garden Show

Catch both Don Engebretson and Baron Biedenweg of Archadeck at the upcoming Fort Wayne Home and Garden show.

I had the great fortune of seeing Don Engebretson, the renegade gardener, speak at a company annual meeting last year. He was one of the most dynamic, engaging, and educational speakers I’ve seen. We’ve all seen many a guest speaker at corporate meetings and most are not that memorable after the meeting. I can even remember a couple for trying hard to use a group demonstration that failed miserably. But, two that I’ve seen of late that are tremendously memorable are Don Engebretson and John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing. If you’re not currently following John Jantsch on Twitter, you should. More on John in a future post.

Don Engebretson is speaking at the upcoming Fort Wayne H&G show and he is certainly a must see. I was actually involved in helping to market the speaking engagement Don had at the company meeting last year. Don was speaking at the Archadeck Deck and Porch Builders annual meeting. So, in looking into marketing his presentation, I took a look at his web site looking for a professional headshot. I found the headshot but professional was not the word I would use to describe it. It was downright kooky. I hope he doesn’t mind me using it here since I’m saying such good things about him. His offbeat and “interesting” headshot are true to his personality.

Don’s speaking topic was about designing a great trade show booth. In addition to renegade gardening, he also has significant experience in trade show and booth design.  None of my business pursuits have landed me at a trade show any time recently but the principles that Don presented stay with me and I still think about them as they can easily translate to great tips for other business meetings. Here are a couple principles he talked about.

1) Don’t stand in front of your booth

We all know how difficult it is to figure out where to stand in your booth. If you stand inside your booth, you might not be able to make eye contact with the people walking by. Even though standing out front and “soliciting people” feels like the right thing to do, people generally avoid that booth like they unfortunately avoid the door at the grocery story with the charity collectors. You also act as a physical barrier to entry if you stand out front.

2) Utilize your backdrop

Don says nothing takes away from your effectiveness more than a plain sterile backdrop. He encourages you to use color pictures, charts, even old pictures but don’t use the standard drape.

3) Put greenery in your booth

As the Renegade Gardener, it makes sense that he would recommend greenery but it goes without saying that it makes the booth come alive, makes it more noticeable, and makes it more inviting.

4) It’s all about how you address the people that enter your booth

I can’t remember the line he used but most of us can’t stand when someone immediately asks “how can I help you”. When people are at a show, they may be getting ideas, they may not even know what you do, but the probably want to take a gander first and then talk.

5) Don’t ever eat or chat to a co-worker in your booth

Our Archadeck owner in Northeast Indiana, Baron Biedenweg, was fortunate enough to be one of the Archadeck owners at that meeting. Likely Don’s presentation provided great insight as Baron designed his brand new 200 square foot display which will feature composite decking, a pergola and several types of railing. Additionally, there will be other product samples. You will be able to find Baron at booths 127/129. The show is February 25-28, 2010 and is located at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne Indiana.

Stop by and meet Baron at the show.  Baron is your local Archadeck builder. Archadeck is a more than 20 year old company and is the premier builder of outdoor structures including decks, patios, screened porches, sunrooms, pergolas, gazebos, 3-season rooms, outdoor kitchens, outdoor rooms – the list goes on and on.

Baron was a born builder. Previous to owning his Archadeck franchise, Baron was a master boat builder, even holding 7 patents related to boat building. In addition to being great to work with, Baron’s teams handiwork is detail oriented, precise, exacting and of the highest quality. After you meet him, feel free to ask him about his free deck safety inspection for existing decks. Or, ask him for a free consultation for your upcoming project.

Take a look at Baron’s Archadeck website. Or, call him at (260) 969 – 8663.  He can also be reached by email.

How to Increase Home Value

In this market, it can seem impossible to sell your house. There are so many home improvement projects you can do to raise your home value, but which ones help the most? The last thing you need to do at this point is waste your time on projects that only garner a small amount of home value.

Remodeling Magazine has been conducting annual surveys of the most cost-effective home improvements since 1987. In 2007, the winner for a mid-range home was a wooden deck. Homeowners who had a 16 by 20 foot pressure treated deck installed recouped an average of 85.4 percent of cost of the project.

Similarly, patios, porches, and other outdoor areas have a high return on investment, as well. To explore these options and raise your home value, take a look at the Archadeck website.

Fighting Sun Damage

It’s the peak of summer now, and the sun hotter than ever. You can get a sunburn all year long, but did you know you don’t have to burn at all to develop skin cancer? Any type of sun exposure can lead to skin cancer and other types of skin damage.

Whether you’re trying to avoid early wrinkling, age spots, keratoses, skin cancer, or more, protection from the sun is key at this point. Anybody who has applied sunblock or sunscreen knows that they only work for a certain period of time. Having to reapply sunblock throughout the day can be a huge pain and get in the way of enjoying yourself.

Hats don’t always work either, since they only cover part of the face. So what can you do if you want to enjoy yourself in your backyard without worrying about your skin getting damaged? Archadeck has a number of appealing options that can protect you from the sun and make your outdoor living space welcoming and comfortable as well.

What Is IPE And Is It Right For Your Deck?

You may have heard of decks made with IPE. You may have heard people gush about their durability and resilience. So what is it?

IPE (aka Ironwood) is one of the commercial names for a group of trees from the species Tabebuia. The trees typically grow from about 140-150 feet, but can reach heights of up to 200 feet. They can be found in Central and South America, but primarily grow in Brazil.

IPE’s tough, resilent properties have given it increasing popularity in the decking and outdoor furniture world. Along with being incredibly durable, it’s also naturally resistant to decay, wet conditions, and infestation by termites and borers. Additionally, it has a Class A fire rating-the same rating given to concrete and setel.

IPE’s heartwood is olive brown to black, and tends to feature striping. Its sapwood is much lighter, usually white or yellow.

Deck Safety

Yikes!

Yikes!

Each year the North American Deck and Railing Association sponsors a “deck safety month”. The goal is to make people aware of the dangers of not maintaining their current deck, or replacing an older one. Here are some scary facts and figures that I found:

“According to the National Deck and Railing Association, between 2000 and 2006, there have been:

  • At least 30 deck collapse-related deaths reported.
  • More than 75 percent of people on a deck are injured or killed when it collapses.
  • There are 40 million decks in the U.S. that are over 20 years old. At a conservative 1 percent, that means 40,000 decks are currently in need of repair or replacement. Taking that estimate to 10 percent brings the total number of unsafe decks to 4 million.”

Decks and patios are a natural spot were many people congregate to either share a meal, enjoy a party, or countless other reasons. A deck collapsing in the middle of a dinner party would be quite a mood killer! So if your deck is in need of a repair or maybe you are looking into purchasing a new one, check out Archadeck.

Choosing the Right Deck for you

Whenever I see a neighbor hanging out on their deck, I feel a little jealous.

I want a great deck too; somewhere to enjoy a warm day, or have a barbeque. But where do I start? What kind of shape would I use? What size works best for my yard? What kind of deck can I afford to build?

What I didn’t realize was the designers at Archadeck can take the guesswork out of building a deck. Not only will they customize every project for your needs and wants, they can give you more options than you ever expected. They design and build everything from porches to pergolas. They even build outdoor kitchens.

So now I no longer have a big question mark hanging over me. I know exactly what will suit my house best. Now to work on decorating…

Making a Porch Casual and Cozy

The Home & Garden section of The Washington Post hosts designers weekly to address decoration problems in and out of houses. Jeff Powell, of Silver Spring, Maryland, was featured in the section to help a family out with their porch.

Sally Erickson and her family have a 10 by 18 foot screened porch off of their dining room. While she enjoys the look of the rustic porch, it’s not a comfortable living space for her family. She wants to know how to decorate it to make it more comfortable and casual for everyone in her home.

So  how did Jeff solve the problem? He used:

-Scattered accessories to hold food and drinks or act as extra seating

-A L-shaped sofa, outdoor rug, and attention-grabbing fireplace to create a comfortable seating area

-A lively dining set to show off the family’s personality
